Meet the team

Barbarryck #0715
Fresh meat coach & referee
Border City Roller Derby, Carlisle, UK

Who are you and what do you do?
My name's Garryck, everyone calls me G or Coach Phat. I founded Border City Roller Derby (Carlisle, UK) in July 2015 with a friend, and I've been hooked on roller derby since. I mostly coach fresh meat and am currently training to be a ref and NSO.

What is your involvement with Derby Directory?
When I was first introduced to roller derby I wished there had been a website that contained loads of stuff within easy reach, which is the reason I wanted to put this website together. As a freshie, I would have found it useful I guess! I haven't been able to find anything similar (though I do have a bad habit of not looking hard enough) so thought I'd put a website together with some friends in the hope that it helps someone out there. This website is aimed at those starting roller derby in the UK, but maybe one day it will cover worldwide.

What advice do you have for newbies looking at this website?
Roller Derby is a big committment, but it's also one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Don't compare your own journey to your fellow team mates. Everyone is unique and everyone learns at different speeds. As they say, be your own hero!

Hoolia #2122

Who are you and what do you do?
Hi my name is Hoolia aka Julia Ivanszky (apparently that is my real name! Boo!!!) and I am a watersport instructor! Found my passion for the outdoors after I almost died of boredom in an office! I am a crazy foreigner who mainly jams for BCRD!

What is your involvement with Derby Directory?
I am what we can call the perfectionist behind the scenes who tries to make everything look pretty! All credit goes to Coach Phat! 😉

What advice do you have for newbies looking at this website?
